Challenge
Delta Fire partnered with a fire protection company to help their client, a major coal mine site, with a critical safety concern. Their facility required the design and supply of two IG541 Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems to protect essential infrastructure. The unprotected switch rooms presented significant risks, not only to personnel safety but also to operational continuity. A fire in these critical areas could have resulted in catastrophic disruption to the entire mining operation, affecting production schedules, equipment integrity and most importantly, worker safety.
The site needed a fire protection partner who could assess its unique environment, understand the specific hazards of a coal mining operation and deliver a tailored solution that would provide reliable, rapid response protection for its most vulnerable assets.
Solution
Delta Fire’s approach began with a comprehensive site assessment and stakeholder collaboration. Our technical team conducted multiple on site meetings with their safety and operations personnel to fully understand the facility’s layout, operational requirements and risk profile.
Through this consultative process, we identified the switch rooms as the highest priority protection zones. These areas housed critical electrical infrastructure that, if compromised by fire, would halt mining operations and potentially endanger personnel throughout the facility.
Our solution included:
- Custom system design for two IG541 Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems, specifically engineered for the site’s switch room configurations
- Risk based assessment to determine optimal cylinder placement, discharge patterns and detection integration
- Tailored specifications that accounted for the unique environmental conditions of a coal mining operation, including dust, vibration and accessibility constraints
- Compliance assurance with Australian Standards and mining industry safety regulations
- Seamless integration with existing fire detection and building management systems
The IG541 gas system was selected for its clean agent properties as it leaves no residue, causing no damage to sensitive electrical equipment, and is safe for occupied spaces with proper egress time.
Outcome
The project was completed successfully, delivering comprehensive fire protection for the site’s critical infrastructure. The coal mine site now operates with enhanced safety confidence, knowing that its switch rooms are protected by a state-of-the-art gaseous fire suppression system.
The mine site recognised the significant value of proactive fire protection investment. They transformed previously vulnerable areas into fully protected zones, demonstrating their commitment to safety excellence and operational resilience.
