Challenge

A global shipbuilding company approached Delta Fire with a specific request to assist in designing and supplying a custom skid fire suppression system to protect a helideck on one of their vessels. The vessel’s location and operational environment posed unique challenges that required a robust and highly reliable solution.

The system needed to be designed to withstand the harsh sea conditions typically encountered by such vessels. In addition, several constraints had to be addressed:

  • The vessel’s design imposed strict limits on the system’s size and weight
  • The fire suppression system had to fit within a restricted area without compromising its functionality or accessibility
  • Despite the space constraints, the system needed to be strategically located to allow personnel quick access in case of an emergency response

These factors required an innovative design approach, which ensured that both the technical requirements and regulatory compliance were met.

Solution

Delta Fire engineered a solution that met all the challenges presented. A compact, efficient and rugged fire suppression system was designed, incorporating:

A single skid with a dual approach

The design included a Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) storage tank along with separate nitrogen cylinders, offering an effective suppression medium for high-risk areas like helidecks.

Hose reels with remote activation

To maximise accessibility and coverage, hose reels were strategically placed around the perimeter of the helideck. These hose reels were equipped with remote activation functionality, allowing rapid deployment in the event of a fire, even under difficult sea conditions.

This system was designed to be compact and lightweight, suitable for the vessel’s confined space and rugged enough to withstand the harsh maritime environment.

Outcome

The custom fire suppression system fulfilled all relevant regulatory requirements. The solution provided effective fire suppression coverage for the helideck, ensuring the safety of personnel and assets in case of an emergency.

By incorporating the DCP storage tank and nitrogen cylinders into a single skid, Delta Fire ensured that the system was efficient, space saving, yet powerful enough to provide effective protection in high risk environments. The strategically located hose reels and remote activation feature provided quick response capabilities, enhancing operational safety.

The shipbuilding company delivered a fully compliant, durable and responsive fire suppression system to its customers, cementing its reputation for safety and innovation in the maritime industry.
