Lightning Protection

Avoiding Building Damage From Strikes

Defend crucial facilities such as storage tanks on petrochemical sites, utilities and office buildings from lightning generated fires with Delta Fire's world class lightning protection solutions. From the latest preventative technology that creates a lightning 'isolation zone' around sites, to proven grounding systems, we deliver compliant products that protect buildings from potentially destructive damage and downtime.
Why Delta Fire

Beyond grounding. We eliminate the strike.

With our sophisticated lightning prevention systems, we can safeguard sites from catastrophic strikes, which are the primary cause of damaging and expensive fires in storage tanks in the petrochemical sector, and other sites such as data centres and mass-transit and logistics facilities.

We partner with American company Lightning Eliminators & Consultants (LEC) to deliver the best solutions on the international market. Superseding outdated lightning rods, LEC's fully engineered premium solution combines lightning protection and surge suppression technology to create an isolation zone that stops direct strikes to a site. The result is a preventative lightning protection system that guards mission-critical operations. We also provide cost effective, low maintenance grounding systems for floating roof tanks on petrochemical sites that greatly reduce the risk of fires sparked by lightning.

Lightning protection systems installed right

We partner with Lightning Eliminators & Consultants (LEC) to provide market leading lightning prevention systems. This combination of the best products and our 25 years of experience guarantees the safe commissioning, installation and maintenance of all systems.

LEC's Dissipation Array System (DAS), which prevents lightning strikes in a protected area, is an advanced, fully engineered lightning protection system that requires considerable experience and expertise for proper installation. Likewise, it is important to engage with specialist fire prevention experts to ensure the safe, ongoing use of the technology. After sales support includes ongoing site assistance, in addition to regular inspections as required.

With our Retractable Grounding Assembly (RGA) grounding system solutions for storage tanks, installation is relatively easy, with a fixed connection from the tank wall to the floating roof being the key to the solution. However, it is important to work with industry specialists to ensure the systems are properly earthed, otherwise the tanks can catch fire. Once the RGAs are installed, they require minimal maintenance.

Understand the Risk

For customers seeking advanced lightning protection systems, Delta Fire conducts a thorough risk assessment of the relevant site. For those deploying LEC's Dissipation Array System (DAS), which prevents lightning strikes to a protected area, we explain its advantages and how it works with grounding and earthing technology to inhibit direct strikes and minimise nearby effects. For clients seeking RGA grounding solutions for storage tanks, we assess tank sizes and types to provide an appropriate system design.

Design Phase

Delta Fire has more than 25 years of experience in designing and delivering lightning protection systems. With the DAS lightning prevention system, we draw from the experience of LEC, which has extensive experience in systems engineering, design and application of comprehensive lightning protection, grounding systems, and surge-suppression systems. Our RGA solutions to prevent fires at storage tanks are relatively simple to design and easy to install.

Installation Phase

During the installation phase of Dissipation Array System technology, we partner with LEC to ensure the appropriate grounding system and surge technologies are used to effectively dissipate storm charges, thereby preventing the formation of lightning in the isolated area. With RGA storage tank solutions, installation is typically handled by specialist tank companies. No ongoing testing is required, and maintenance requirements are minimal. Delta Fire supplies rebuild kits when needed.

Lightning protection boosts safety for resources companies

Lightning strikes are far more common than many realise and, with the changes in the global climate and changing weather patterns, they are well and truly on the increase.  Australia is at particular risk because, according to a joint NASA and National Space Development Agency of Japan study, approximately 70 percent of lightning occurs on land in the tropics, where the majority of thunderstorms occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lightning Eliminators are devices or systems designed to prevent, divert, or reduce the risk of lightning strikes on structures, especially in high risk industrial environments.

Lightning Eliminators & Consultants, Inc. (LEC) provides comprehensive systems that stop catastrophe before it happens.

Unlike outdated lightning rods, LEC solutions are truly preventive, combining lightning protection, grounding, and surge suppression to create an 'Isolation Zone' that inhibits direct strikes to the protected site and minimises the effects of any strikes nearby.
Lightning Eliminators engineer solutions to try and remove the risk of lightning strikes. Because direct strikes are prevented, secondary effects are eliminated as well.

LEC's advanced Dissipation Array® System (DAS®) prevents lightning strikes to the protected area and the array itself by continually lowering the voltage differential of the protected area to well below lightning potential.

DAS works with LEC's grounding and surge technologies to effectively dissipate storm charges, thereby preventing the formation of lightning in the isolated area.
Floating roof tanks are especially vulnerable to the direct and indirect effects of lightning. A direct or a nearby lightning strike will cause electrical currents to flow across the tank shell and roof.

When these lightning currents arc across the roof/shell interface, they can ignite any flammable vapours that may be present. It is therefore necessary to bond the roof and shell to prevent arcing at the roof-shell interface.

To combat the risk of rim fires, the industry has been using metal strips called “shunts” that electrically bond the shell and roof of the tank in multiple locations. Unfortunately, the bond that these shunts establish is unreliable and creates a greater risk of sustained arcs:
• Rust, waxy product deposits, and paint can line the inner wall of the shell
• The floating roof can drift slightly off-center and disconnect some of the shunts from the shell
• API Testing proved that shunts will arc under all conditions, even if the tank wall and shunts are new and clean

For floating roof tanks, the RGA solves the challenge of creating a continuous low-impedance bond between the tank roof and wall, greatly reducing the risk of fires sparked by lightning. The RGA provides the petrochemical industry with an effective, low-maintenance grounding solution with exceptional return on investment.

The best lightning protection for petrochemical sites combines Dissipation Array Systems (DAS) to prevent direct strikes and Retractable Grounding Assemblies (RGA) to ensure safe earthing. These systems work together to minimise fire risks and equipment damage.
A lightning protection system is a network of components designed to prevent or redirect lightning strikes. It often includes air terminals, grounding systems, and surge protection, such as Delta Fire's advanced DAS and RGA solutions, which go beyond traditional rods.
A grounding system safely dissipates lightning current into the earth, preventing fires and equipment failure. Without proper grounding, even advanced protection systems may fail, especially in volatile environments like petrochemical storage.
Our lightning protection solutions use engineered systems from Lightning Eliminators & Consultants (LEC), including DAS and RGA technology. Unlike traditional lightning rods, our systems stop strikes before they happen. Making them ideal for high risk, high value facilities.
